The following resources give you valuable information on initiatives that promote health care quality. You can use these resources to help you make sound health care decisions.
Physician Tiering (for non-Medicare members only) – Our physician tiering program tries to address rising health care costs and help you make informed choices about the specialty care physicians (specialists) you see as a member of our plan. Members in our Basic, PLUS and Community Choice plans have lower office visit copays when they use Tier 1 and Tier 2 specialists in Massachusetts. (Note: primary care providers are not tiered.)
Patient-Centered Primary Care Providers – UniCare is currently working with primary care practices in Massachusetts, through our Patient-Centered Primary Care program, to help them incorporate the key elements of patient-centered care into their practices. Patient-centered care practices are those that have integrated systems of care within their practices to foster the relationship between patients and their primary care providers (PCPs). The goal is to provide care that keeps you healthier, motivated and informed.
Vitals SmartShopper – SmartShopper is a program to help our non-Medicare members save money on out-of-pocket costs by comparing the costs of tests and procedures with different providers in Massachusetts. Members can earn up to a $500 cash reward when they shop for health care services and choose a cost-effective option.
Serious Preventable Adverse Health Care Events – The Plan does not pay for costs associated with 28 serious preventable adverse health care events, in line with the Commonwealth’s commitment to patient safety.
Hospital Compare† – This website lets you compare hospital quality in several different ways. It’s provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Leapfrog Group for Patient Safety† – Leapfrog is a private, not-for-profit organization sponsored by many major businesses. Its goal is to promote safety, quality and affordability of health care by providing information that helps consumers make informed health care decisions. They provide information to help you compare hospitals for their overall patient safety ratings and for how safely they perform certain procedures
