Health Care Quality Resources

The following resources give you valuable information on initiatives that promote health care quality. You can use these resources to help you make sound health care decisions.

UniCare resources

Specialist Tiering (for non-Medicare members only) – Specialist tiering is an important part of the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission's (GIC) interest in addressing rising health care costs. UniCare assigns Massachusetts specialty care providers (specialists) to levels or tiers. All specialists within a practice have the same tier. Members in our Basic, PLUS and Community Choice plans have lower office visit copays when they see Tier 1 specialists than when they see Tier 2 or Tier 3 specialists. (Note: Primary care providers are not subject to the group tiering process.)

Patient-Centered Primary Care Providers – UniCare works with primary care practices in Massachusetts, through our Patient-Centered Primary Care program, to help them incorporate the key elements of patient-centered care into their practices. Patient-centered care practices are those that have integrated systems of care within their practices to foster the relationship between patients and their primary care providers (PCPs). The goal is to provide care that keeps you healthier, motivated and informed.

SmartShopper® – SmartShopper is a program that helps our non-Medicare members save money on out-of-pocket costs by comparing the costs of tests and procedures with different providers in Massachusetts.

Serious Preventable Adverse Health Care Events – The Plan does not pay for costs associated with 28 serious preventable adverse health care events, in line with the Commonwealth’s commitment to patient safety.
